Subject:Ceramic Man
Posted By: Doug Johnson Mon, Aug 29, 2022 IP: 174.29.191.103

Hello,
I will appreciate your help in identifying this ceramic figure. It is 11 inches tall. I'm afraid that I cannot tell if it is a modern piece or an earlier one. Thank you.

This is a transfer-decorated representation of the Qing Kangxi Emperor (1662-1722). Its base has two impressed marks, both apocryphal. The four-character one shown here at left is in standard characters and reads down and across from its top right as "Fujian Association" (Fu jian hui guan - 福建會舘). The two-character mark in seal script and positioned 90-degrees right of proper viewing position reads down when flipped as "Kangxi"

The Fujian Association was a group of artists from Fujian Province who worked at Jingdezhen during the early 20th century and produced some phenomenally well sculpted and painted figurines including Buddha and Chinese legendary images which if authentic sell nowadays for huge sums. This contemporary period image is purely decorative.

Best regards,

Bill H.
