Subject:What Is This? Opinions Welcome
Posted By: Dave H Sun, Aug 28, 2022 IP: 23.230.46.10

Posting this as a long shot that someone may know what it is, used for etc. First this is not mine as a friend sent me the pictures which are of very poor quality.
I am unable to make out the design or what the characters on the seal are. Looks flat on the back almost like a plaque but I cannot see any hooks etc.
All comments on what this may be or what material it is made of is appreciated. Thanks to all ....

In my opinion it looks to be a covered ink-stone. I’d need more info on the piece to comment on the material.

I did not think of that and I think you nailed it with the ink stone. He will be very happy with your information.

I agree with you, it's a covered inkstone. the seals look like they were impressed in a soft material such as clay, suggesting that this is not carved from stone.

Probably a compound of some stone dust and resin. Look for tiny air holes on the underside.
