Subject:I.Nagy & Bill Impressed Stamp On Porcelain Buddha Further Help Please
Posted By: andy Mon, Jul 18, 2022 IP: 2a02:c7f:f00e:6400:4

Thank you I.Nagy and Bill for your replies confirming that the middle line on the impressed mark reads:

朱茂盛 - Zhu Maosheng

I.Nagy, in an earlier thread you posted that Zhu Maosheng is written 朱茂生 (Subject:Re: Buddha statue possibly Zhu Mao Sheng? Posted By: I.Nagy Wed, May 27, 2020).

As far as I can tell, the character to the left on the middle line in the attached image does not look like either of the above.

Could this be someone other than Zhu Maosheng?

Thanks again, Andy.

Here is a photo of a Budai statue with normal Zhu Maosheng mark and of your mark with contrast enhanced. You should be able to see the similarity with the characters 朱茂盛 (which are read right to left on your image and photo). I believe I.Nagy's sheng/生 character is a rare incorrect reading.

I tried re-reading the enhanced mark and believe the top line is a street name to the extent that the last it conceivable could be the character 街 for street.

The bottom two characters would logically be read as a geographic location or populated area, and the best shot I could Google up in character searches is Baibei/白碑/"White Monument", a location in Sui County, Suizhou, a prefectural city in Hubei Province. I am by no means certain of the bei character and was unable to find a specific "White Monument Budai or Buddha image in my Google search of Suizhou attractions.

Three-tiered oval marks like your were typically used at Jingezhen and a few other other exporting kiln locations in China during the Republic Period (1911-1949).

Best regards,

Bill H.

Dear Andy,
The impression on the statue reads from right to left and not from left to right. Before 1948 the majority of the horizontal writings were written from right to left
Therefore, the character on the left is 盛 shèng
盛茂朱 Shèng ←Mào ←Zhū
In some other places the last character in written
生 Shēng 朱茂生 Zhū Màoshēng
e.g. here;

Re. of my input to Sam`s posting on. May 25.2020

It is possible that the artist used 3 different given names;
茂盛 Màoshèng 茂生 Màoshēng and 茂記 Màojì
or they were relatives.

With regards,
I.Nagy

The characters are meant to be read from right to left: 盛茂朱
