Subject:seal on Japanese painting
Posted By: Horst Graebner Sun, Jul 17, 2022 IP: 88.69.135.216

The handwriting on the srcoll reads: niwatori - onna Yukinobu ga; 雞 女雪信画 ("fowl - painted by woman Yukinobu)
The painting is well done, but certainly not by Kanō Yukinobu (狩野雪信) (1643-1682), perhaps in her style.
The mounting could be around 1800.
I can't read the seal. Can someone help?

女雪信 - Onna Yukinobu
is the signature of Kiyohara Yukinobu 清原雪信 1643-1682
She was the daughter of Kusumi Morikage and her grand-uncle was Kanō Tan`yū
The seal is a rather complicated design,
I read it; 狩野 Kanō (狩 simplified to → 守
野 could be the mixture of 野 and 埜)
She often used (other) Kanō seal impressions* in her paintings.

With regards,
I.Nagy

Dear I.Nagy,
as always, thank you very much for your help.
It "calms" me a bit, that the seal is a rather complicated design. :-)

I would agree this is a wrong attribution on the slip.
Though your pic is not enough to really value the quality, but this is not painted like Yukinobu would have done. Background, bamboo, stream are too dense and not soft enough.
The seal is not of any good painter I know. But I have a feeling I have seen it before on a painting attributed to Jakuchu and was annoyed about it than too.
The seals of Yukinobu say either Yukinobu or Kiyohara. She usually signs the paintings.

Dear Peter,
certainly not a painting by Yukinobu and not in her style either.
Many Thanks
Horst
