Subject:Oops V2.0 - 2 More Imari(?) Cats with Identification & Translation Request
Posted By: Chris Fri, Jul 15, 2022 IP: 2600:8801:fb00:a16:8

Hello Once Again,

So while pulling Chinese art I came across box I had labeled "2 Imari cats, ..." (though tbh I do not know whether they are Japanese or Chinese in origin) and as I'm trying to close the book on Japanese art wanted to request the forum's input.

Both measure 7 1/4 inches tall (18.4 cm) and are enameled overglaze, with overpaint for the eyes and whiskers and gold highlights in the vein structure of the larger leaves.

I wasn't sure of the cartouche's proper orientation so I posted it in duplicate. I am hoping someone might be able to identify/translate the cartouche (and maybe make sense of the triangular mark), thus helping identify their time and place of origin.

As always, I sincerely appreciate the time and assistance you all provide and thank you in advance for the same.

Kind Regards,
Chris

Thank you I. Nagy for the quick response!

May I request your assistance in identifying/translating the inscription on the couple netsukes I've posted? I've attach a link to a rat cluster netsuke below, and thank you for any help you can provide.

Kind Regards,
Chris

The stamped character mark reads down and across from the top right as "Manufactured (or Made) in Macao" (Ao men zhi dao - 澳門製造). The triangular impression possibly contains the product number "011". The cats likely were imported into Macao as blanks for decoration and refiring at one of the local workshops. Gotheborg.com shows the image of a Japanese Toyo-labeled porcelain jar with a similar 3-digit triangular mark which suggests to me that the cats may be Japanese blanks decorated and refired by a Toyo decorating shop known to have operated in Macao since at least the 1980s.

Best regards,

Bill H.

Thank you Bill for the identification and for the quick response! I guess I'm 0-3 with my "Imari" cats. ;) At least the first one won't be alone now!

If it's not too much to ask, may I request your assistance in identifying the artists of the two netsuke's I've posted? I've attached a link below to a mask (or Buddha?) netsuke I posted earlier this week, and thank you for any help you might be able to provide.

Kind Regards,
Chris
