Subject:Oops... one more porcelain piece with transition and age estimation request
Posted By: Chris Sat, Jul 09, 2022 IP: 70.179.57.71

Hello,

I forgot to post this with the other Japanese ceramics I've posted to date (also found a painting and a mystery bronze I need to revisit). This lobed tripod bowl measures a little more than 6 inches in diameter.

The porcelain is thin, with walls measuring about 3mm in thickness. Busy, busy, busy (1000 faces?) pattern as shown. Marked on the bottom as shown - aside from the ubiquitous Dai Nippon, I read the last kanji as "zo" or "tsukuru." Am I correct in interpreting the one immediate above it to be the kanji for Satsuma?

That leaves the single kanji above it (top-most in left column). I've searched the resource Martin kindly provided but have not been able to identify it correctly (I'm not even sure whether it's four or five strokes).

So once again, I humbly ask you (all) for your help and thank you in advance for the same.

Kind Regards,
Chris

Hi Chris,
Indeed "thousand faces" Kutani ware, marked: Dai Nippon 大日本 - Kato 加藤 Zo 造.
Date around 1900, made for export.
There were many potters / decorators called Kato in the Meiji era active in the Seto, Satsuma and Kutani region. So I don't know which Kato this is and can't tell you more.
Regards,
Martin.

Hi Martin,

Thank you for another assist! This is one of a couple pieces that have never been displayed since they were acquired - I liked the look of it enough to acquire it, but it's such an outlier compared to my other Japanese ceramics it always seemed like the odd bowl out.

Thanks again!

Kind Regards,
Chris
