Subject:Large pair of (Kutain style?) Imari chargers with translation/age request
Posted By: Chris Wed, Jul 06, 2022 IP: 2600:8801:fb00:a16:3

Hello All,

Below are three photos of (one of) a pair of chargers I have measuring 15" (38cm) in diameter. The mark is handwritten, but appears to say the same thing on both plates.

These have always been a mystery to me - any assistance you all can provide with regards to translating the mark and estimating the age of these would be, as always, warmly appreciated, and once again I thank you in advance for the same.

Kind Regards,
Chris

Hi Chris,
The mark reads in a somewhat cursive way: Arita 有田 Ichido 一堂 Saku 作 (Arita - work by Ichido).
The read seal also reads "Ichido" in a more stylistic way.

Mark and seal of Ichido Tsuji (real name Sadao Tsuji 1911-1983). After showing a talent for pottery painting Ichido Tsuji joined the Koransha Design Department. In 1954 he started his own kiln: Sohyoh (Söyö). He painted the white porcelain of Arita with a unique expression method.
Date of your chargers somewhere between 1954-1983.
Regards,
Martin.

Hi Martin,

Thank you so much for resolving the mystery of these plates! I had described them as "mid-20th century Imari," but always wanted to know who had made them. Thank you once again!

Kind Regards,
Chris
