Subject:2 of 2 Agano ware(?) ceramics with request for identifying mark
Posted By: Chris Tue, Jul 05, 2022 IP: 2600:8801:fb00:a16:f

Hello,

Below are two photos of the second of two pieces I have that I think(??) are Agano ware, a tea cup with a marking painted on the bottom. It appears to have been fired twice, once with a green-grey glaze, and again with a translucent glaze. The decorations are painted underglaze in white and blue.

As with the first piece, any assistance you all can provide in translating the markings and an estimation of age would be warmly appreciated and I thank you again in advance for the same.

Kind Regards,
Chris

杏土 - Azuchi
is the name of an Imari-yaki kiln (Imari City, Okawachi-machi) with the history of the Nabeshima clan.

With regards,
I.Nagy

Thank you once again I. Nagy! I hope you don't mind, but your post raises more questions...

So technically speaking, it would be considerd Imari ware then? Is there a name for this style of Imari (twice fired, painting over colored glaze but underneath transparent glaze? Also, is there a time/period associated with this particular style, or is it common?

I open the above questions to others as well by the way, and once again thank you all in advance (especially you, I. Nagy!) for your time and assistance.

Kind Regards,
Chris
