Subject:Question re: artist and period of Chinese(?) painting
Posted By: Chris Mon, Jun 27, 2022 IP: 2600:8801:fb00:a16:3

Found and purchased this out of an estate about 15 years ago labeled as a "Japanese Woodblock," though upon inspection it appeared to be painting on silk. The subject appears to be a Chinese beauty contemplating a few butterflies. Measures approx. 15.5" (39.4 cm) by 6.75" (17.3 cm). Please pardon the glare in the first photo.

Any information regarding the artist, the inscription, and the period would be warmly appreciated and I thank you in advance for the same.

Kind Regards,
Chris

Thank you once again I. Nagy for your time and assistance. Your translations have gone a long way towards deepening my appreciation for thee pieces.

May I also request your assistance in translating the kanji on my iron tea kettle (link below)? Thank you in advance for any assistance you might be able to provide.

Kind Regards,
Chris

Your Yang Guifei with buttefly is by Maruyama Oukyo.
But in this size it is indeed a woodblock reproduction.
Shimbi Shion and Kokka publishers and maybe others had produced high quality reproductions of this kind. Was the reproduced work on silk they used silk too.
Here an example of such a book:

Thank you Peter for both the information and the link. Not sure why, but I've never made the connection between the size of a 'canvas' and the medium, and thank you for the same.

Kind Regards,
Chris
