Subject:Assistance requested identifying 6-character mark on, and age of, Imari cat
Posted By: Chris Wed, Jun 22, 2022 IP: 2600:8801:fb00:a16:f

Hello I. Nagy, Stan, et al,

Below are three photos of an Imari cat measuring approx. 15 cm in height with no underglaze blue, signed as seen on the bottom. Once again I humbly request your (collective) assistance in translating kanji in the hopes of identifying the maker and/or kiln and finding a corresponding age, and thank you all in advance for your time and assistance in pursuit of the same.

Kind Regards,
Chris

This is a contemporary possible Hong Kong transfer-decorated Chinese product imitating Japanese-made lucky cats. It bears a mark of "Yi Qian Tang Long Nian Zhi" (義謙堂龍年製), meaning "Made in the year of the Dragon for the Hall of Righteous Modesty (or humility)". Gotheborg.com carries this mark as "1980s" and perhaps being decorated in Hong Kong either by the Overjoy or Ah Chou Painting Factory owned by relatives who are known to specialize in decorating Chinese porcelain blanks, including cat images. Such items have popped up in the forum previously.

Best regards,

Bill H.

Dear Bill,

Thank you for the assistance and identification - now the question is, does it get cataloged with the Japanese or the Chinese art? Either way, I think I'll likely consign it to the cat's pile of cast-offs.

Kind Regards,
Chris

It's a Chinese work in the Japanese style and Imari palette. Minimal decorative value.

Thanks again Bill. Is there any chance you might share your thoughts on the 4-lobed (presumably) Ko-Imari bowl I posted the week before last? I posted the link below, and once again, thank you I advance for any assistance you can provide.

Kind Regards,
Chris

I saw this one when it was posted and had a gut feeling the piece might be Showa period (post-1926) but not enough confidence to say for certain. You might want to re-post the same item and ask explicitly for Japanese porcelain and pottery collector comments.

Good luck,

Bill H.
