Subject:Another request for information re: Sugakudo woodblock
Posted By: Chris Wed, Jun 15, 2022 IP: 2600:8801:fb00:a16:7

Hello All,

Below are images of another ukiyo-e print, this one by Sugakudo.

As with the previous print, I am kindly hoping that the wonderful members of the community here can help me identify the title (or flora and fauna in the print), as well as any additional information that can better help me appreciate it.

Thank you all in advance once again.

Kind Regards,
Chris

Dear I. Nagy,

Thank you once again for taking the time to translate the kanji on my woodblock prints. You, Stan, and others not only fill knowledge gaps, but help me better appreciate each of these in turn.

Kind Regards,
Chris

No. 39, Plovers and Dry Reeds (Chidori, kareashi), from the series Forty-eight Hawks Drawn from Life (Ikiutsushi shijûhachi taka)

See the link below for one at the Boston MFA.

Dear Stan,

Thank you once again for sharing your knowledge and for providing a link to a curated example. As I said to I. Nagy, your collective assistance goes a long way both towards helping me learn more about these pieces and appreciating them at a deeper level, both for which I am grateful.

Kind Regards,
Chris

You're welcome, Chris. I enjoy seeing "new" prints and researching them.

Here's a little information to increase your knowledge. While it is unlikely that your print is a later reproduction from recarved blocks (the profit motive isn't there), you can be certain that yours is an original without a detailed comparison to a known original. If you observe the wood grain at the top above the birds, you will note that it is the same between your print and the one at the MFA. This wood grain is like a fingerprint and is unique to the woodblock that produced the print. This can come in handy if you want to know if a Hokusai or other valuable print is an original.

Cheers,
Stan

Dear Stan,

Thank you for the fascinating suggestion! I had already been able to determine that a couple prints by Hiroshige (Shono) and Hokusai (Great Wave) were later reproductions (from 'new' key blocks) based on a detailed comparison with copies in curated collections but never knew nor even thought that the actual wood grain form the key block could itself be a determinant.

Thank you for that tip and have a wonderful (rest of your) weekend!

Kind Regards,
Chris
