Subject:Can anyone identify the artist of this painting?
Posted By: Sam Sat, May 07, 2022 IP: 70.44.73.137

I recently purchased this ink and watercolor painting mounted on a long scroll. Someone helped me with the text translation and according to them the red stamp reads "Xiongcai". Is this an imitation of Xiongcai Li's paintings? I can upload additional photos if needed. Any helpful information or insight is greatly appreciated. Thank you so much for your time!

秋郊閑歩 - Strolling in autumn suburb
丙寅三月時於廣州雄オ - In March of the Year of Fire-Tiger (1986) at Guangzhou by Xiongcai
Seal,
雄オ - Xiongcai

Li Xiongcai 黎雄才 1910-2001
Calligraphy, signature and seal seems to be perfect. The question is the provenance.

With modern reproduction techniques seal and signature are nearly meaningless in authenticating paintings.
The painting is not good, the calligraphy is even bad. the connections between the last 4 characters 時於廣州 are so unmotivated and constructed, I would never accept this to be a peace by a great master, even if the son would try to convince me.

exactly, this one supposedly dated 1986. Here is one Christies offered, dated 1988: https://www.christies.com/en/lot/lot-6117235

Thank you so very much for your help and time as always! I really appreciate it. I purchased this from a local auction close to Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. They usually sell items from private collections in the region. I have written to them asking if they knew anything about the provenance. Hopefully they will respond to me. I'm not sure where to go with it if they can't offer any more information. If anyone has any suggestions I would be greatly appreciative! Thank you so much again!

Not sure if this is needed, but just to clarify, I unfortunately do not believe your painting is a genuine work of Li's; perhaps you meant to reply to our indefatigible translator, I. Nagy.

Yes, I was attempting to respond to Nagy. Apologies for any confusion. I wasn't sure about this painting's authenticity from the start but I'm not an expert on this artist's work (obviously). So I thought I would get an opinion from someone who knows better than I would. I really appreciate everyone's time and feedback.
