Among other interpretations, I believe the mark reads "Fragrant Pavilion Collection Made by San Bao" (藏春亭三保造 - cang chun ting san bao zao). This is a modern kiln in China, which apparently has been around at Jingdezhen since circa the beginning of the 21st century.

Best regards,

Sorry Bill, in this case I don't agree with you.
In my opinion it's a Japanese mark: Zoshuntei 蔵春亭 Sanpo 三保 Zo 造 (Made by Zoshuntei Sanpo).

Zoshuntei Sanpo is a trademark of Hisatomi Yojibei Masatsune and his oldest son Hisatomi Yojibei Masayasu (1812-1878). They were one of the first potters in the area of Arita and Mikawachi granted an export permit in 1841.

According Capt. Frank Brinkley's Japanese English Dictionary (1896) the correct translation is "Miho" instead of "Sanpo". However, "Sanpo" is the most seen kopied translation.

Regards,
Martin.

I welcome your correction, Martin. Have to confess having considered the possibility of Japanese origins but couldn't find a clear reference to Zoshuntei Sanpo in my character searches online before hitting on the Chinese kiln in the results. I'm still much a grade F and low C student under you and I.Nagy when it comes to things Japanese.

Best regards,

Bill H.
