Subject:Footed Dish - Age ?
Posted By: Peter Sat, Apr 16, 2022 IP: 178.165.174.162

I've recently acquired a footed shrimp dish which unfortunately is unmarked on the base.

Would anyone be willing to suggest the most likely reign period during which this dish was produced ?

Any help appreciated.

Thank you.

Nice example.
Not 100% sure but based on the images looks republican period 1912-1949.

Guys, I believe this shrimp dish or "nappie" probably is a 19th century product that was made circa the Xianfeng era (1861-71), based on info and images found in the book "The Great Fortune", an auction catalog edited by the eminent German collector of late Qing porcelain, the late Georg Weishaupt. He is credited with popularizing late Qing porcelain in a community of collectors who had long disdained it as low quality.

The last image above shows the legendary Chinese hero Liye Hou (李鄴侯 = Prince of Liye), another name for (李畢) Li Bi (722-789). An identical image of him is on a cup found in the above-cited catalog along with other images of period Chinese porcelains from the 19th century's 3rd and 4th quarters. I also have a small collection of these wares, from which I show images of one rare example with a rose medallion ground. Although the foot rims differ in form, other characteristics would appear to be similar. It bears a mark of "Made during the Xianfeng Xianfeng Reign of the Great Qing Dynasty.

Best regards,

Bill H.

I've posted a few more close-ups which may perhaps benefit making a more informed decision as to the likely age of this piece.
Thanks!

The latest photos are identifiable from "The Great Fortune" as:

TOP: Guo Ziyi (郭子儀 - 697-781), also known as Guo Shangfu 郭尙父 and Guo Changfu, Fenyang Wang - Prince of Fenyang (Feng yang wang - 汾阳王), who accepted the allegiance of the Uighurs.

BOTTOM: Dongfang Shuo (东方朔 - 154-93 BC), also known as Dongfang Manqian (东方曼倩), birth name Zhang Shuo (張朔) He was a Han Dynasty scholar-official, "master of esoterica" (fangshi), author, and court jester to Emperor Wu (r. 141 – 87 BCE). In Chinese mythology, Dongfang is considered a Daoist xian ("transcendent; immortal") and the spirit of Venus who incarnated as a series of ancient ministers including Laozi. Dongfang Shuo is depicted in the Wu Shuang Pu (Table of Peerless Heroes) by Jin Guliang).

No doubt in my mind that the period of for your shrimp dish is as stated originally.

Best regards,

Bill H.
