Subject:Has anyone seen anything like this in Meiji Satsuma ware before?
Posted By: Blu McCormick Fri, Jan 28, 2022 IP: 2601:285:8300:80:de3

Hey guys, this 13-pound, 18" tall x 13" diameter, piece appears to be a Kinkozan Satsuma (mark attached). I asked in a separate post about the mark, but am actually wondering if any of you have even seen anything like it before? I am having trouble finding something comparable to it online or at the auction houses. At a minimum, there are other large lidded and legged jars out there, usually with lions or beasts on them. What would you call it? A large jar, large pot, a sudo-koro? FYI, the lid comes off and it isn't for incense. You could fit gallons of milk inside it!

The mark indeed reads: Dai Nippon 大日本 - Kinkozan 錦光山 Zo 造 (Great Japan - Made by Kinkozan).
I have not seen a Kinkozan vase like this before, however, Kinkozan made a lot of different styles of decorations and vase shapes.
The decorations could be compared with the Kinkozan vase below.
Regards,
Martin.

Thanks, Martin. I appreciate your time.

It is really nice to have confirmation of the mark.

There are vases like your example in Kinkozan ware (thanks) that are similar to the patterns and drawings though not exactly. There are pieces made by other houses in Meiji era satsuma ware that have similar elements, too.

This really seems to be a unique surviving piece from the Meiji era. I am dying to know its story. Why aren’t there more? It is so solid and well made (not delicate) that surely other copies would have survived with lids intact is my thought. There aren’t even similar shapes out there that I can find. Was it specially commissioned? I will likely never know. It is in such beautiful shape that I can only surmise that someone treasured it for many of its years.
