Subject:Sculpture Porcelain - beautiful made.
Posted By: Tim Tue, Jan 04, 2022 IP: 2a02:a03f:8096:7a00:

I have a sculpture and I was wondering a few things.
Is it Japanese / Chinese?
Is it possible to translate the maker mark on the bottom?
Is this a rare sculpture?

Thanks in advance!

Kind regards,
Tim

Your pottery sculpture bears a mark of Liu Zemian (剽澤棉), male, Han nationality, born in September 1937, Foshan, Guangdong. He was in the first batch of the National Intangible Cultural Heritage representative successors of Shiwan art pottery. At the age of ten, he began studying pottery with his father in 1947. In 1955, he entered the Shiwan Fine Ceramics Factory and has been engaged in pottery creation until now. Guangdong craft artists named him a Master of China Arts and Crafts.

Liu is among Chinese arts and crafts masters. Most Shiwan pottery art has been inherited from his family, of which Liu Zemian is a fourth-generation member.

I didn't see any indication that Liu has died yet. He would be about 85 now. I you can ascertain that Liu has died; this would mean there's a chance his mark is being perpetuated by a family member.

The production number on your pottery statue Looks like it may be of the Bodhidharma, though I'm unsure. The production number "47" would indicate a product of the contemporary era of the kilns at Foshan.

Best regards,

Bill H.
