Is it the Gyokusui who is mentioned as the carver of other online ivory pieces? The two I found are also quite small, as is mine.
The signature doesn't seem to be the same, though.

Gyokusui Japan, Tokyo, Meiji period (1868-1912)

"Gyokusui" name is same, but the signature and the quality of carving is entirely different.
Your samurai is a later work by an unknown "Gyokusui" or just simply an abuse of the name.
Perhaps, G. Lazarnick's book "The Signature Book of Netsuke, Inro and Ojime Artists in Photographs"
would shed light on the question, but it costs $400
- what I can't afford.

Thank you. Your expert advice confirms my guess that the artist is not the same.
