Subject:Satsuma mark
Posted By: Martin Michels Wed, Dec 15, 2021 IP: 2001:1c03:5807:8400:

I found this bowl with an intriguing mark.
The only kanji I could read were the first 5 on the right: Nippon Satsuma Kuni. From then on I'm lost.
So any help is highly appreciated.
Thank in advance,
Martin.

Oops, something is missing from the translation.
2nd line,
寳暦九年四月 Hōreki Kyū-nen Shigatsu - In April of the 9th Year of Hōreki Era (1759)
- is correct.

Dear I.Nagy,
Awesome, I really appreciate your quick help.
I never could have decipher this 2nd column myself.
Remains the question, why 1759 ?
In my opinion this bowl is a Meiji made bowl, so is this date some special date? I didn't find something on Google.
Thanks again,
Martin.

Dear Martin,
First I have to make a minor change in the second line,
寳暦元年四月 - Horeki Gannen Shigatsu - In April of the 1st Year of Horeki Era (1751)
However, the question still remains a question.
The painter may have been absentminded when he wrote the date.
Without doubts it is a Meiji made item.

With regards,
I.Nagy

Dear I.Nagy,
Thanks again for your help and the correction.
Maybe the date was meant as a conmemory of the new era of Horeki, which was said to have been created to mark the death of the retired Emperor Sakuramachi and the death of the former Shogun Tokugawa Yoshimune (according Wikipedia).
Anyway, we will never know the intention of the artist.
Regards,
Martin.
