Subject:scroll-painting
Posted By: MariaRR Thu, Jul 04, 2019 IP: 37.123.173.164

Hi, is there someone who can tell me something about these two scroll-paintings? I bought them at an auction in Sweden a few years ago. They are very beautiful, but it would be exciting to hear from any knowledgeable person when they may have been painted, and possibly who the wise man could be? Is it a Chinese painting, and the one with the eagle maybe Japanese? wondering with beest regards/MariaRR

Hi,

Two scrolls are Japanese painting.

About a picture of the hawk, the stamp says "Soga"(曽我).
Soga is big name and very famous Soga Shohaku(曽我蕭白).
If it's an originl painting, it's museum class.

Dear Botan,
I am extremely grateful for your response.
Of course, this leads to new issues.
If the painting is as old as from the 1700s, should I have the painting up on the wall? It is now hanging in a room that is often dark and without direct sunlight, but what do you recommend?
The next question is whether there is any muesum or expert who could possibly look further at the painting? I Think that if it is a Soga Shohaku maybe it is of interest to know about it's existens. It was purchased from Sweden's leading auction company Bukowskis, and comes from a well-known collector's collection, but since it was a death estate that sold the painting in the middle of the summer, and the "summer-experts" at the auction firm might not have been experts on Japanese painting.
It is amazingly beautiful and perfect in the details. And of course I would still appreciate it, even if it would be a copy! :)
I send additional pictures, so you can decide for yourself. Thank You again for the answer! Best regards/MariaRR

hi Maria,

nice paintings! good mountings! any inscriptions on the scrolls or boxes?

the portrait of the abbot looks much more interesting to me. Seems to be a treasure.

the hawk painting is alone by condition and style much older than 18th century probably early to mid 17th century. Soga Chokuan and Nichokuan are famaus for hawks. But there are more Sogas. And of course forgeries.

of course its fine to hang your painting. thats what they are made for.

Dear Peter, thanks for the reply. Great fun to read! I was surprised to get an answer now, because it was so long since I wrote the post on the forum.
I'll read a little more about Soga, there are a few. Unfortunately, there is no box that belongs to these scrollpaintings. Here are some more pictures of the abbot. Thanks again for your reply, Best regards/Maria

Dear Maria,
The portrait is of good quality but could be younger than I first thought. The good condition on the right side shows the brightness of the coloration. The badly handled water damage might confuse a good understanding. They rubbed away a lot of color.
Its of a smaller size but seems very well drawn. I am not well experienced with portraits. But this could be a noblemans portait. I can not see for sure a kamon which should feature rather prominent on the red fabric. In the borders of the tatami and in the green fabric under the left hand you could see the four diamonds of the Takeda clan. This is however a fairly common design so it should not be valued to much.
The mounting is using older material which seems to point also to the 17th century.
