Subject:Figure de Bouddha Guanying aus épaules tombantes ?
Posted By: Jean-Frédéric BAETA Mon, Nov 01, 2021 IP: 2a01:cb00:8bc6:3900:

This image of the Buddha strikes me as quite possibly a European Chinoiserie creation, starting with the fact that it exposed body surface is painted, as evidenced by the slight overlap of paint over the outer edge of its curly coiffure. Whether it bears any relationship to Guanyin, who is a manifestation of the Mortal Buddha Avaloketshvara, is arguable in the absence of further iconographic evidence of that particular deity's attributes. Like much other Buddhistic Chinoiserie, this image likely was produced for the decorative market in the West during the first half of the 20th century. Other opinions welcome.

Best regards,

Bill H.
