Can I ask for help to identify what this item is and what it is made from? Thanks for indulging me.

The only information I can give you is that is a Japanese netsuke, ivory by what I can make out in the photos. The wear to one hole indicates it may have been used for its intended purpose. Others will need to translate and add additional information.

Hi,

What you have there is a Japanese netsuke. It's carved from ivory and depicts an oni.

Yours dates to the second half of the meiji period (1868-1912) so late 19th-early 20th century.

It's a nice piece.

from what I can see this is a Tagua Nut carving. If so, then it was carved in China.

It's a Japanese netsuke.
Typically made from ivory or wood.
Yours I believe is a copy made from resin and sold as a, tourist type ware. 2nd half of the 20th century.
