Subject:Signature on an Osaka actor fan
Posted By: Guy Wed, Aug 25, 2021 IP: 2a02:1810:4833:9600:

This is a wooden uchiwa fan with the painted depiction of the Osaka actor Jitsukawa Enzaburô in a kabuki rol during a performance at the Naka-za, Osaka in 1862.

The fan bears a signature in cursive and a seal which both are difficult to decipher.
For the signature, my best guess is 'Katsuen' (活宛).

Any thoughts?

Guy.

Dear Guy,
To me it looks more like 清家. I could not decipher something in the seal, but it shows definately different characters.

Hi Peter,

Thank you.

Your reading as 'Seike' (清家) makes more sense indeed. I'm still a bit hesitant about the second character 家; the writing on the fan lacks a curve to the left at the base, as you should expect. For this reason, I was thinking in the direction of character 宛 in the first place.
I add some examples of cursive writing for both characters.

Guy.

Dear Peter,

I had another look.

Must be 清家 indeed - the seal remains illegible.

Many thanks for the assistance.

Guy.
