Subject:Satsuma woman and child/help to identify mark and age
Posted By: antigone Fri, Nov 27, 2020 IP: 2a01:cb10:360:ef00:c

Hello,

Can you help me to identify the mark of this 18cm high and 6 cm large figurine of a woman and a child and the age, perhaps around 1930?
Thank you in advance,
Sincerely,
antigone

The mark is a Torii (gate) with the numbers 9 九 and 1 一, not 91 which is 九十一.
I've seen Torii marks with all kind of numbering
(4-1, 4-2, 5-7, 6-1, 6-3, 6-5, 6-6, 7-3, 8-5, 9-1) on different porcelain items of Kutani ware and Satsuma ware, but no idea what it means.
Most Torii marks are on pre-ww2 Showa items (late 1920's - 1930's).
Regards,
Martin.

Dear Martin,

Thank you so much for this information,
Don't you think it is a meaning for export Satsuma or Kutani wares, this one would be a part of different figurines?
Thank you to take on your time to answer,
Sincerely,
antigone

Dear Martin,

I have this japanese satsuma vase with a seal "left 13" but not with a torii gate, certainly part of a pair,
so perhaps 4-1 and 4-2 are pairs and other 6-1, 6-3, 6-5 a group of some vases or figurines,
just an idea,
Sincerely,
antigone

I've come across this page while looking for another Japanese mark. Please scroll down to 'Rokuzo', I think this is the mark you are looking for :)
