Subject:Antique Original Japanese Silk Painting Needing Artist Translation, Etc. Thanks!

This is one of two I will be needing help with Translation to determine if the information on the Card it is on is correct. I happened upon many 1930's large cardboard Art Study Boards from the Ryerson Library Art Institute Of Chicago at an Estate Sale recently. Must have been decommissioned or Sold or something for this Estate Sale was a Deceased early Art Collector. This Painting on Silk would have been cut-out of a Scroll more then likely and glued onto these Art Study Boards back in the 1920's 30's. The Institute at that time din't Care so much about Foreign Paper Art or Small Watercolor Paintings to use any Conservative methods of Display! Once again needing to have all the Calligraphy and Seals Translated to see if it does or does not match the Info. the Art Institute Library wrote on the Board. Thank You for your Help! Gary K

The English translation is basically correct.
Here is my more detailed translation with the readings of seals.

Signature,
沖澹老人寫 - Chūtan Rōjin -sha
於東山草堂 - Tōsan Sōdō ni oite
Painted by Chūtan Rōjin
at Tōsan Sōdō

Chūtan Rōjin 沖澹老人; Old Man with Innocent and Selfless Heart (Pseudonym of Nakabayashi Chikutō)
Tōsan Sōdō 東山草堂; Humble Abode in Higashiyama (Kyoto)

Upper seal,
成昌之印 - Nariaki no In - Seal of Nariaki
(Nariaki was his original given name)
Lower seal,
字柏明 - Ji Hakumei - Courtesy Name Hakumei
(Hakumei was his courtesy name)

With regards,
I.Nagy

The painting is correctly described.
Its also a good painting.

inscription:
Old Chuutan painted this at the Eastern Mountain Straw Hut

seals:
成昌之印 Seal of Nariyaki
字伯明 Nickname Hakumei

condition is OK. Should be possible to remount this. If pasted with the scroll backing even easier. The 20th century comes with a lot of troublesome conservation methods. But this is also the case in Japan....

Thank You Very Much Peter! I din't know there was someone on Asian Art Forum that could Translate Seals besides I. Nagy! You also gave me some more Info. to add to what I. Nagy gave me. I will be putting up another nice Painting also from the same Art Institute Collection. Not as good as this Artist but definitely one of his Best Paintings I think. Sincerely Grateful! Gary K

Hi Peter -

Thought I would send some real closeup shots of the Painting in question. I did just to be sure took it outside in strong light and examined it again with a good Loop and found it all to be a true painting not a print. It measures `15 x 5 Inches and looks to have retained its scroll silk backing. Don't know if they had trimmed any of it but the measurement was precise. Artist is very good with the art of thinning the paint for light touches and thick when needed. kind of hard to really see in my pictures but quit obvious seen live with a Loop in good light. I put up the other Painting on Asian Art Forum. From same Collection and once again examined outside with Loop and is a True Painting. This Artist is not as well known but compared to Paintings of his this one is one of his Finest to me. Thanks Again for your Valuable Help! Gary K
