Posted By: Bill H Mon, Aug 16, 2021 The mark reads down and across from the right in six characters as "Made during the Chenghua Reign of the Great Ming Dynasty" (Da Ming Chenghua Nian Zhi - 大明成化年製). In my experience, it would be rare to find one, much less two such Ming or early Qing vases in this "contending colors" or "doucai" palette unless you paid several thousand dollars apiece for them. Not that identical pairs weren't made then. This mark of the famous Chenghua Emperor was copied onto many fabulous "doucai" porcelains of the later Ming and early Qing dynasty, such as seen in the images herewith of a matching pair of early 18th century dragon & phoenix cups with grounds of scrolling lotuses which hammered in at more than US$21,000 in a Sotheby's New York auction this past March. In my opinion, the palettes on your vases show enough variance of color and transparency to be modern era, though attractive in the decorative sense. Neither is the mark shown particularly convincing of the early era. |

Posted By: Pat Tue, Aug 17, 2021 Thanks Mark and Bill, great information on the mark and style. Those bowls are beautiful. My uncle (where these came from) was a great traveler and spent way too much on many of these type of things, in his later years he had an antique shop in Palm Beach. |
