Subject:Qing lacquer dish?
Posted By: Geoff Thu, Jun 24, 2021 IP: 2a00:23c7:ed05:7400:

I must stop collecting things just because I find them interesting! This is my first piece of Chinese (?) lacquer ware...supposedly from the Qianlong dynasty; C18th. 29cm diameter.
Through the damage, it can be seen that it is lacquer over wood. The dish is noticeably warped.
I have gone so far as to buy Harry Garner's book on lacquer ware, but found this to deal mainly with Ming dynasty wares...which this is not.
What puzzles me most is the undecorated back of the dish. Is that what points to a Qing dating, or could it even be Japanese.
I am not sure if the colour (red, yellow and green) is original; it seems to be sloppily painted over the carved lacquer.

The decoration looks press-moulded rather than carved. This seems to have started in the late 19th or early 20th century. Is it heavy or light in weight? Most press-moulded pieces seem to have been made on a core of soft, heavy metal like pewter or lead. In contrast, lacquer wares on a wood base should be very light.

Hi Robert,

thanks for having a look. I don't know what to look for with press moulded pieces. Certainly, the decoration isn't as deep as carved lacquer I've seen. It is on a wooden base, which can be seen where it is damaged...and, yes, is light in weight.

Thanks,

Geoff
