Subject:Help verifying a Cloisonne Dragon Bowl with Ming Dynasty mark
Posted By: alysan Wed, Jun 23, 2021 IP: 2601:4c1:c600:5c37:3

Hi All. I purchased this beautiful bowl at a charity shop several years back. I love it, it's been our key bowl on our front table. I have recently had the mark translated and it's apparently made during the great Ming Dynasty.

I would like to know if it's real, or a repro, and I would like to have it valued so that I can insure it, and potentially stop using it to put our car keys in.

Any help or direction is greatly appreciated, thank you. I'm happy to upload more photos if needed.

Not my area and your pictures are not great. However I think it's a genuine example from the early Republican period 1912-1949.

Hello Alysan

I am far from being an expert on Cloisonné. But as with Chinese porcelain, the vast majority of marks are not necessarily from the period. This does not mean they are fakes or brand new objects. I know there are many cloisonnés with Ming marks made during the late Qing period or Republic period. Maybe that's the case with yours. Anyway, a beautiful piece, in my opinion. You should definitely think about not putting your keys in it! =D

On this very nice website you can find information about similar pieces:

Wish you all the best!
