I purchased this at a resale shop. Can anyone please help me understand what it is? It's 3 inches tall.

It's a ivory carving with good age.
In my opinion it's Japanese and from the Meiji period 1868-1912. If there are two holes on the piece then it's known as a netsuke.

Hi,

Actually that looks Chinese to be both in the subject (long beard and hairstyle/hat) and the ivory.

For some reason Chinese ivory always seems to crack more than Japanese. No idea why.

Still probably 19th century I'd say. A nice decorative statue.

Just my opinion.

Looks to me to be mammoth ivory
