Thank you for the info. I'm curious though, I
just spent time looking closely with a loop.
I've attached a couple close ups to see what you think as far as it being a print. Thank you!

Dear Marilyn,
I can see on the close up pictures that the painter used highly concentrated ink, which contains a very small amount of water. Heavy ink is commonly used for delineating outlines to give them a sense of shapness and boldness, and for depicting objects that are closer to the forground in order to realize an outstanding effect of three-dimensional depth of the composition. I could only find a limited number of pictures from He Weipu on the net, but non of them was similar
to this one.
I suggest, you should take this painting to one of the major art auction houses for example Sotheby's, to see if it can be authentiated as a genuine painting of He Weipu. Be sure to take any evidence of how it came into your posession etc.

With regards,
I.Nagy

My question is if this translation implies it was not by He Weipu? I'm confused with "Art name of an unidentifiable Painter" My last question, I promise!

Dear Marilyn,
This picture was painted by He Weipu. In the colophon he indicates clearly that it was "painted after the painting technique of Yunshan-daoren", or in more literaly translation he was "imitating the painting methode of Yunshan-daoren"
Imitating the works of great masters has long been the major method for learning to paint in China. It could be performed either from memory or from observation of an original work or copy placed in front of the learner for imitation. This is the best way to catch the spirit of the original work through decoding the brushwork with the mind, and reproducing the painting with hand and brush.
Our only problem here is that I can't identify who hides behind the Yunhan-daoren art-name.I can't find it neither on the net nor in my art-name dictionaries. Some painters until the mid 20th century have used half a dozen or even more art-names. Some of these simply may have been forgotten.

WSith regards,
I.Nagy

Hi again, so I submitted a request to Sotheby's for their review. Unfortunately all they said is that it wasn't something they could auction. And they did not give a reason. Would you take this to mean it not actually by He Weipu?

It means it is not worth enough to be worth them handling it. Typically, that means it is not an original or not by the artist - if the artist's work sells for high amounts. If the artist's work typically sells for below their minimum, it means nothing. You may have to get a second opinion.

Cheers,
Stan
