Subject:Japanese plates identification and possible valuation
Posted By: Kat Moir Mon, May 10, 2021 IP: 2a02:c7f:243c:7100:1

Hi,

I’m hoping someone can help me.

I recently got 6 Japanese plates and through research found the one of the exact same sold for €651 in 2014.

I am now trying to find more information on these plates. The listing said it was satsuma, but I have had the stamp translated and it apparently reads fukagawa sei. I’m not sure if there is a connection between the two or if one is the incorrect information.

I will attach pictures of one of the plates I have and a screen shot of the sold I found. Any help or advice would be much appreciated.

The mark is indeed Fukagawa 深川 Sei 製 (made by Fukagawa) with on top the Koransha logo.
Fukagawa is Arita ware.
According the Koransha website (https://www.koransha.co.jp/koransha/koransha_mei.html) this mark dates from the early to late Meiji era. That probably explains the bid of 651 euro on Catawiki.
Regards,
Martin.

Thank you so much for your response!

Is it at all related to satsuma as the Catawiki listing stated?

Thanks so much

Not at all Satsuma related, wrong white color, no crackled glaze, wrong kind of decoration.
Despite the Catawiki page did say Satsuma plates, the bidders knew what it was: Arita Yaki.
Regards,
Martin.

A most delightful looking plate with herons in flight.
As noted most definitely fukagawa ware.
Was the one at catawiki larger than yours? It might explain the price achieved.
