Subject:Request help identifying mark on Japanese saucer
Posted By: Roger Sun, May 02, 2021 IP: 2601:281:c202:b68a:b

Hello all,
Recently got this small saucer. It has a couple of hairline cracks but the worksmenship is amazing. I've had no luck figuring out the mark on the back. I'd greatly appreciate any assistance! Thank you!

It's Kutani ware and the mark reads:
Oite Kutani 於 九谷 (= in Kutani).
Oda Sei 織田 製 (= made by Oda).
Yamaki Ga 山木 画 (= painted by Yamaki).

There were 2 generations of Oda: Jinzo Oda 1st (1846-1915) and Jinzo Oda 2nd (1898-????). They were pottery makers and also exporters of Kutani ware from Terai. In 1885 Oda 1st opened the Oda Jinzo Shoten in Yokohama. In 1923 their Yokohama factory was hit hard in the great Kanto earthquake, therefore they moved to Kobe, but shortly after that the business closed.

I have no information about the painter Yamaki, it was just one of the many painters working for Oda.

Regards,
Martin.

Martin,

IMO, 山木画 reads 'Yamamoto ga'. Eventually Shunkyo Yamamoto?

Guy.

Guy,

You're right, it reads Yamamoto 山本.
I overlooked the bottom horizontal line in the 2nd Kanji.
It's not Shunkyo Yamamoto, who was a painter, but not of ceramic.
Thanks,
Martin.
