Subject:Japanese Sashimono? inscription help
Posted By: John T. Fri, Apr 30, 2021 IP: 2a01:cb05:8886:f400:

Hi,

I was hoping someone here might be able to provide me with some insight into just what these three large flags might be.

I've heard that they're both Sashimono and Buddhist (from two different sources).

One of them bears this inscription. My kanji being quite poor, I think I can make out May 4th year of Keio which would be around 1868 and the Boshin war, if my calculations are correct which would seem to support the theory of it being a sashimono.

If someone else could help be with the rest of the text however, I would be grateful.

Regards,

I edited the image to try and make the writing easier to read.

They are funerary flags.
慶應四辰年五月吉日
On an Auspicious Day of May in the 4th Year of Keiō(1868)
為本來直浄信士 - I-honrai Chokujō Shinshi
A typical Buddhist Dharma name.
It is a tradition in Japan for a deseased to receive a Dharma name from the priest who performs the burial ritual. "Shinshi" at the end means:
man
施主 - Chief mourner
催儀口 - Ceremony口 (Half of the 3rd character is missing)
幸高政康 - Kodaka Masayuki
活堂 - Katsudō (Could be a shop name)

With regards,
I.Nagy

Hi,

Many thanks once again for your help. I'm going to do some reading up about Shinto funerals then.

Thank you once more,

Dear John,
You'll not find anything on Shinto funerals, because
there are only Buddhist funerals in Japan. The Japanese people born as Shintoist and die as Buddhist.
With regards,
I.Nagy
