Subject:Help with Satsuma ware mark
Posted By: Ian Mon, Apr 26, 2021 IP: 86.0.150.215

Hi,

I need a bit of help on this mark. It is from a Satsuma vase with dragons and moriage detail. Probably late Meiji period. The mark is clear and I can transcribe all the characters without trouble, but I can't fit the makers mark to a known Satsuma maker.

The maker appears to be 吉光山 so is it Yoshimitsu or similar? I can't find a maker matching this name. I'm also mindful that if the first character were instead 錦 it would be Kinkozan.

Any thoughts appreciated.

The name 吉光山 might be something like Yoshimitsuyama in native Japanese (KUN) reading.
But it's more likely, that the name is Kikkozan in Sino-Japanese (ON) reading.
A lot of Japanese ceramic artist names are in ON-reading, like Kinkozan, Meizan, Taizan, Shogetsu, etc.
I have a similar mark of this artist, might be a potter or decorator, or both.
Regards,
Martin.
