Subject:signature on a serie of porcelain plates
Posted By: Marc Fri, Apr 23, 2021 IP: 77.141.95.229

Hello to all
This series of porcelain plates is signed with two kanji (?) ideograms. Do you think this is the artist's signature?
Thanks for your help,
Marc

The mark is shown upside down and reads: Momota 百田.

Momota marks are the marks of Shozaburo Momota, a porcelain wholesaler and retailer, who had an export store in Horai Machi, Yokohama City, during the late Meiji period (circa 1900) till the end of the Taisho period (circa 1925).
Most of his porcelain products are Kutani ware.

Rregards,
Martin.

Thanks very much. Do you know where I'll can find more information about Shozaburo Momota and his trade ?
Was it just a merchant or did he also have factories, as he signed his porcelain plates ? In Europe, the signatur of ceramics is rather the fact of factories or the factories chief.
Best Regards,
Marc

I have no idea where you can find more about Shozaburo Momota. The info I have is from a Japanese blog:
