Subject:Help with my chinese warrior
Posted By: Adrian Fri, Apr 23, 2021 IP: 2a02:aa12:457f:dd00:

Hello everybody,

I have inherited the paintings of that wonderful warrior that fascinated me since I was a child. The warrior belonged to my grandparents for at least 60 years. The only thing I know about my warrior, is that an uncle of my grandfather (a Jesuit monk) brought him from China.
Could any of you solve the riddle about my warrior's story? What do the texts say? who is the author? If the author is known, what could you tell me about him? What region does the painting come from? How much can the painting cost? (although I am not going to sell it). Forgive me for so many questions and thank you for helping those of us who want to learn so much. Greetings from Spain!

Dear I. Nagy, Will and Peter, thank you millions for revealing the mystery of my painting and for the help that you offer to people who want to learn. I have been reading information about "The Three Kingdoms" and I find it very interesting. As quickly as possible, I am going to buy the books, even if it takes me years to read. Do you know of a very good publication / editorial?
Mr. I. Nagy, thank you for the translation, I always believed that these 6 texts say something more fascinating ;)
Dear Will, thank you for your interest in the paintings. But I will not betray Guan Yu, my family and "Yi" for 500 dollars :) The image seems wonderful to me, it measures approximately 82cm X 43cm and each text 82cm x 24cm (without frames). In the case of selling it, it would be for many thousands of dollars :P Mr. Guan Yu and his horse are at my home in Switzerland, Guan Yu came from a war in China and is now in a neutral country.
I am going to upload some photos of a small beautiful figure of an oriental old man in a little while. That is going to be another topic.
Thanks!

Hi,

the warrior in your painting is Guan Yu who is one of the most famous figures of the Chinese civil war which led to the Three Kingdoms Period (220-280).

During the 7th Century people started to worship him and this development peaked in the late Ming Dynasty.
(his deified names are Guan Gong and Guandi)

There are many paintings on the market which depict famous scenes from his life (even though some of them are fictional).
However I do not believe that this is the case with your painting. Looks like the painter had only the intention to draw the person.

You can also find many figures of him (in Bronze, wood and porcelain - both antique and modern).
I was lucky enough to purchase a large gilded Bronze Figure of him a while ago which was made during the late 16th Century.

Overall the Three Kingdoms Period is very popular, not only in China but also in Japan and Korea.

That being said: If you plan to sell the painting (now or in future) I might be interested.
Since shipping would be within Europe it should not be too expensive.

Regards

.... subject is Guan Yu.

In China not a subject of the serious artist but a hero/god for the people.
