Subject:Chinese Imari Mark Read
Posted By: Dan D Fri, Apr 23, 2021 IP: 107.181.177.13

Hi all,

I have these Chinese 'imari' style bowls but I, for the life of me, cannot find a similar mark and my Chinese is limited to Ming & Qing Emperor period marks and very basic words. So far I have only been able to decipher the word 酒 (jiǔ) which represents wine/liquor/spirits so I am assuming these are wine bowls (hopefully a gold star for me!). I purchased the new version of Gerald Davison's Marks on Chinese Ceramics (he only made 100 copies and I snatched it up a copy the second he published it - I have been waiting for the new edition of this book for years) but unfortunately there isn't the mark in there! I am assuming the mark is something about enjoying the deliciousness of wine (for which I agree!). Any help from my fluent Chinese friends would be greatly appreciated! Thank you!

D.

麗都酒樓 - Lídōu jiŭlóu - ca. Gorgeous Restaurant
It is not maker's mark, but a very common Chinese restaurant name, found in almost every Chinese city.
The restaurant simply asked the maker to put the restaurant's name on the bowls they have ordered.

With regards,
I.Nagy

Thanks I.Nagy, that would explain why I couldn't find anything on the mark!

They must have very kleptomaniac fingers! Talk about stealing hotel towels..

The restaurant might have gone into bankruptcy,
