Can anyone tell me anything about these scrolls? Perhaps the artist or the subjects?
Thank you.

Signature reads,
山村柳祥謹冩 - Carefully painted by Yamamura Ryūshō

Yamamura Ryūshō (Year of birth and death unknown)
Was active in the 1850s- 1870s.
He was a disciple of Utagawa (Goseda) Hōryū (1827-1892), who set up a workshop in Yokohama. Hōryū's practice was to paint portraits commissioned by foreigners in wash on silk, basing the portrayals on photographs. His photographic painting on silk grew very popular, such as portraits of foreign man and woman in Japanese dress.

With regards,
I.Nagy

In addition to Mr Nagy's comments, I think these scrolls deserve to be restored. They are precious relics from the early Western influence in Japanese society, at the end of the bakufu and beginning of the Meiji period.

Guy.

Dear Guy,

If we separate the central part - the drawing itself and place it under the glass and in the frame - like a painting - can this be considered a proper restoration? I am afraid that restoring the scroll to its original form will be very difficult and expensive. In addition, ivory is used here, and now is illegal.
