Subject:Help with a Japanese vase
Posted By: sylvia Wed, Feb 17, 2021 IP: 173.31.2.137

Hello,
Could somebody here tell about this vase/urn? When it was made and if it is a Satsuma? Does anybody know what those figures on the vase mean? There are two of them with horns. It is very tall, 26" and I think it might've had a lid but now is missing. It is pottery/porcelain and is unmarked. The hand painting is exquisite, very detailed. Thank you very much.
Kind regards,
Sylvia

That is well crafted great stuff; would say around 1850; definetely japanese.
but give some hires / close view shots of the figural paintings ( i like the Oni ) and the bottom / material where glaze is lost please, to be sure.
Satsuma is a dense, creamy stoneware, a bit chalky to the touch - quite heavy.
Regards
Edmund

Thank you so much Edmund! I did not know much about it when I purchased it from the auction but I just loved the craft and I purchased it anyway. I think is stunning. I am attaching here more pics for you. Indeed, the material underneath the glaze and paint is a creamy, chalky stoneware. Thank you again and all the best wishes!
Kind regards,
Sylvia
