Subject:Blue & White Chinese Porcelain - HELP
Posted By: Sinder P Thu, Dec 03, 2020 IP: 2600:8807:9140:4d90:

Ok,

This is the last piece I have.
Again, thanks for looking at them and helping me out, if you can.

this piece has lots of lettering on it. It is also marked on the bottom. Seems to have brown markings under the glaze on the inside.

Pretty birds on it.

also, teeny holes in the piece.

4" across, over 2 1/2 " tall..

Tony Allen's latest book, "Allen's Antique Chinese Porcelain - The Detection of Fakes", shows a good assortment of blue & white Chinese wares with apocryphal Kangxi four-character marks. One, a saucer dish dated to circa 1900 (Fig. 27.1 on page 255) has a similar bird & flower garden scene resembling yours, wherein pairs of mated magpies eye each other amidst the peony blooms. Magpies were favorites of the Empress Dowager Cixi, who controlled the reins of power during the Guangxu era, and as such, the birds were used in the imperial "Dayazhai" (Studio of Great Elegance) birthday pattern, which had been made to honor Cixi. I would only expand Tony's dating from circa 1900 to include a chance of modern manufacture in deference to other more modern examples he shows with a calligraphic style closer to that of your bowl's mark.

Here's an image of Tony's saucer, which I believe he won't mind me using as as an example here if not a small promo for his recent book.

Best regards,

Bill H.

Thank you Bill,

I get so excited when I think I've found something very old. I did a lot of research before posting here. I love that there are so many knowledgeable people on this forum.
I found almost the exact tray that I posted pics of on this forum on ebay for thousands of dollars.

I have no idea what the difference is between them. So, that's why I come here.

The one I have has a sticker on the back where someone wrote 1820-1850.

Again, I so appreciate the details you provided.

I looked at the same seller's wares and wasn't impressed that the prices were all that realistic for the current market. In one case, the item offered was a small late 20th century slip-cast porcelain vase being toted by a couple of children. It had a fritting problem in the famille rose motif under the mouth rim and mediocre enameling elsewhere, with an apocryphal early Qing red base-mark applied by decal. The price was over a thousand bucks, apparently on the basis of the seller saying it has 'a rare mark'. Anyone who thinks that even the rarest of transfer-applied marks on a $25.00 vase from an Asian import place is going to make the piece worth more than 25 bucks certainly doesn't rate a spot on my favorites list.

Just one sign to watch for.

Good Luck,

Bill H.

I have a few pieces I'm curious about, and some of them have a very similar pattern. It doesn't have the birds, but it has the exact same odd criss-cross pattern and reign mark. Even the texture looks the same. Have you learned anything new?
