Subject:Vase Signature
Posted By: ECFA Mon, Mar 06, 2017 IP: 2603:3020:1c0a:2700:

Anyone have any ideas on this signature. It appears in raised enamels on the base of a yellow cloisonne vase.

Imo, this mark in seal script reads 'Gôtô' (後籐) refering to Gôtô Shôzaburô (NOT Seizaburô as often mentioned, active ca. 1860-1910). Yokohama, in use ca. 1874-1910.

Cfr. Fredric T. Schneider, 'The Art of Japanese Cloisonné Enamel', ill. 027-029,p. 243 (not this mark in seal script). Bio on page 28.

Guy.
