Subject:Unknown Japanese BG mark
Posted By: Mark Hughes Wed, Nov 09, 2011 IP: 92.20.160.55

Can anyone please help identify this "BG" mark on a large Japanese meat plate?

In this case the Japanese mark is a brand name on what appears to be European stoneware, perhaps English. I lack any references in that area, but perhaps someone else will recognize the maker.
Best regards,
Bill H.

I suggest this is a European dish with a pattern called "Japanese".

"Japanese" is the name of the pattern transfer-printed on this England-made white earthenware or ironstone plate. Tableware sets including scores of pieces were made with orientalistic themes around the 3rd quarter 19th century and into the 1920s, mostly for export to USA.

Good luck,
Cal

I can't find an ID of the maker as being 19th or early 20th century. Some reproductions of such wares were being made beginning in the 1960s, this is possible even with the crazed glaze (which could be due to a bit of cost-cutting in manufacturing rather than age).

Good luck,
Cal
