Subject:Chinese Reverse Painting on Glass

Subject:Reverse Glass Paintings

Lee Sun, Feb 10, 2002 The first two are actually ancestral portraits of a Qing dynasty civil official and his wife of the fifth court rank (I believe the bird in his chest badge to be a pheasant, but it is not very clear). These are normally done in paper or silk on paper, rarely in reverse glass. They would date from around 1900 - 1930 (many were done posthumously and even into the republican period for families to honour ancestors. The last one is a trade painting of a beauty and unrelated to the previous pair, probably earlier, ca 1875-1908. |
