Subject:Help identifying silk painting, inscription and seal (possibly Chinese, purchased as Japanese)
Posted By: Rosario Princiotto Sun, Jul 12, 2026 IP: 87.156.138.107

Hello everyone,

I recently purchased this hand-painted silk painting at an auction in England. It was catalogued simply as a Japanese watercolour, but after a closer examination I am no longer certain whether it is Japanese or Chinese.

The painting is on silk with a silk brocade border. The painted area measures 37.5 × 15.5 cm. There are no wooden rollers, so it is not a traditional hanging scroll.

I would greatly appreciate any help with:

identifying the inscription,
reading the red artist’s seal,
identifying the faded blue stamp on the reverse,
determining whether it is Chinese or Japanese,
and estimating the approximate period.
Thank you very much for your time and expertise.

A Chinese work from the mid-20th century onward.
Inscriptions,
棕陰沉思 - Palm shadow meditation
亦芬作 - Painted by Yifen
Seal,
亦芬 - Yifen

The faint blue stamped inscription reads,
亦芬画 ‐ Painting of Yifen

Yifen is an unidentifiable female given name.

With regards,
I.Nagy
