Subject:Names on a Satsuma Censer
Posted By: Victor Martinez Mon, Jun 08, 2026 IP: 69.139.9.47

Hello-
I'm looking for help translating the artist and workshop names in the left column. I believe the right column says "Dai Nippon / Tokyo / Ginza", but correct me if I'm wrong.
Any input is appreciated!

I read it,
大日本東都銀座街善器堂田定製造
Dai-Nippon, Tōto*, Ginza-gai, Zenkidō**, Tasada seizō***

*  Literary name for Tōkyō
**  Name of workshop
*** Made by Tasada

Seeingly it was produced during the Meiji era for export.

With regards,
I.Nagy

Thank you for this. Have you ever heard of the workshop or maker? I can't find anything on either.

In the early Meiji era, there were countless small workshops and makers operating throughout Japan that produced goods almost exclusively for export. The names of some of these have been completely forgotten.
With regards,
I.Nagy
