Subject:Bizen Related Jar Seal Mark- Translation?
Posted By: Kevin Sat, Apr 12, 2025 IP: 74.102.98.127

Hi All,

a recent find which should be a sister piece to another Bizen-related jar in my collection. Both of them have a highly similar character around the foot, recessed in the middle, and among other attributes a high concentration of tiny white stones in their make-up. However, the foot of this one by the photo has a small thin layer of "goma" greenish to clear which goes around the perimeter. While its body has no glaze, there is a slight sheen around most surfaces.

The seal might be in Hiragana. The segment on the left side, elevated areas might be to the character "ra" ら .

Any help with the seal or with examples of similar wares would be greatly appreciated

H: 12.5"; 31.75 cm

W: 16.5lbs, 7.5 Kg

Thank you for looking,

Kind regards,

Kevin

Correction, the natural ash glaze formed around the foot should be described as having a greenish to white tint in terms of color range, and one w/out the sesame pattern (goma) as given above. thank you
