Subject:Why authors use different seals and help with our scroll
Posted By: Samuel Havlicek Wed, Mar 26, 2025 IP: 37.188.136.155

Hello,

my grandparants we gifted a scroll with a bird on hibbiscus. It was around 60s when they were given it in Vietnam for medical help with children, we did not knew what was written there and had it upside down on our wall.

I gave it to proffesional translator and she gave me translation and asked some experts on asian art, but they did not identify the author with certainity.

Here is the translation, (translated by me to english):

"润生先生雅属癸未冬至前十日韶石作", Especially for mr. Runsheng /润生先生 painted and bestowed by painter Shaoshi /韶石 10 days before winter solstice in year Kuiwei./癸未.

Especially for mr. Runsheng, painted and bestowed by painter Shaoshi 10 days before winter solstice in year Kuiwei.

"癸未/year Kuiwei" should by any year divisible by 60 with remainder 23 . For ex. 1943/60 = 32, rm.23, 2003/60 = 33, rm.23, 1883/60 = 31, rm. 23.

One 韶石/Shaoshi (1913-1990) was found, he came from south China and lived in Vietnam, so it could be him, but I could not found the same seal on any other of his paintings. Why are the seal varing for one author? Is there any other known Shaoshi? Can someone please help me identify the author.

Additional info: The painting looks very old, even thou it was in 60s, it was given to them by an old doctor who got it from his father so I am not sure if the nearest Kuiwei was enought to make it happen...

Thanks to anyone for help

Regards

Samuel

Dear Mr. Havlicek,
In most cases, painters sign their works with either their given names or pseudonyms and apply their surnames to the picture with a seal imprint - in this case both surname and given name.

Seal (Pic.3 - upside down on your photo,
張 - Zhang - Surname of painter

Seal (Pic.2) - in right position, however the hand-drawn completing the imprint of the left side character is not quite correct,
韶石 - Shaoshi - Given name of painter

Zhang Shaoshi 張韶石 1913-1991
A native of Panyu, Guandong, was a famous painter of flowers and birds.
Zhang Shaoshi, a young orphan, lived according to his uncle Zhang Chunchu and learned painting from him, and later went to Shantou as a painting teacher. In 1932, when he returned to Guangzhou, learned painting from Deng Fen(鄧芬). In 1939, he lived in Hong Kong, and during the war, he took refuge in Macao, Vietnam and other places. After the war, he settled in Hong Kong and set up the "Magnolia Flower Museum" (木蘭花館)to teach apprentices and devoted his life to Chinese painting.

With regards,
I.Nagy
