Subject:Scroll Painting: Identify Characters and Seal
Posted By: Miano Tue, Feb 18, 2025 IP: 175.176.33.95

Hello Friends,

I want to identify the artist and/or period.

It is a scroll with calligraphy (characters) and seals. Would you be able to translate the characters/seals, advise any artist whom this work may have attributed to and the period(60-year cycle)?

Finally, is this Japanese or Chinese?

Kind regards,

Miano

It is Japanese.
Calliraphy,
天照皇大神 - Amaterasu Sume Ōkami*
豊受大神 - Toyo Uke Ōkami**
* Great Deity Who Illuminates the Sky
(In Ise Jingu Shrine usually refers to Amaterasu Ōkami the Goddess of Sun)
** Goddess of food and grain in Japanese mythology.

Colophon,
皇大神宮禰宜天見通命裔荒木田神主謹書
Kotaijingu Negi Ama no Mitōshi no Mikoto Sue
Arakida Kannushi Kinsho
Respectfully written by the main priest Arakida, descendant of Amano Mitōshi no Mikoto of Ise Imperial Shrine

The two seals contain the same colophon text divided into two parts.

These scrolls are sold as gifts in the Ise Jingū Shrine. It is unlikely that older than 50 years.

With regards,
I.Nagy
