Subject:1720s Japanese print of the Nakanocho
Posted By: Tom Aspden Tue, Nov 19, 2024 IP: 146.199.136.215

Hi,

I recently came by this two page print by a currently unknown artist, from about 1720 I'd guess, of three women and two kamuro with a title that begins mentioning the Nakanocho. I can't however make out the rest of the title slip, and would also be grateful for some help on the lines of text below!

Thanks in advance,
Tom

Title cartouche,
中之町色の風呂や山様
Naka no machi, iro no furoya Yamasan
Naka no machi, Pleasure Bathhouse Yamasan

Inscription below,
上野豪華の屏風や山様
Ueno gōka no byōbuya Yamasan
Ueno, Luxury Folding Screen Shop

It seems that Yamasan was engaged in a diverse range of businesses.

With regards,
I.Nagy

Thanks a lot! The name also seems to make a lot of sense having looked into it a bit, as Yamasan was a term used for samurai or priests that came to the pleasure quarters from Ueno and Shiba temples.

Regards,
Tom

You don't provide any dimensions, but this appears to be two opposing pages from an ehon (book). It can be hard to determine the artist of the prints without knowing what book it is from and the title page of said book.

Cheers,
Stan
