Subject:Japanese Piece
Posted By: BL Sat, Nov 09, 2024 IP: 70.107.185.131

Hello Everybody,
I recently bought the small piece below. It is 4.5" high, and 2.5" wide and deep. Any information about its age and what material it looks to be made out would be appreciated. There is one character on the bottom. Is that its signature? A translation would help. Thanks.

In my opinion your netsuke is made out of treated ivory. The picture is somewhat blurry but I think I can make out parallel graining and "cross-hatchings" in the texture.

Firstly this is a Okimono figure and not a netsuke.
It would appear to be ivory but the pictures are not the best.
It appears to be a carving from the Meji period but I also see signs of a modern drill. So it would need to be handled and examined in person in order to identify the period and material.
