Subject:Chinese art print
Posted By: Douglas Hall Sun, Oct 06, 2024 IP: 174.53.134.214

I purchased several inexpensive art prints in Sasebo, Japan in 1967. I have, with help, identified the artists fro two of them. I am told that the one attached is actually Chinese.
I would appreciate any information about the print, and/or the artist.

This is very probably a Japanese print, for two reasons : the hiragana character ひ in the title (which too cursive for me to read), and the two carts which look very much like Gosho guruma carts. The cut in the middle suggests the print is two pages of a ehon (the pages are usually 17 or 18cm in height)

We are undoubtedly dealing with a Japanese print.
Inscription on the right fringe reads:
南ひめ大内裏原初入來圖
Minami-hime Dainairi gensho jurai-zu
Princess Minami's* first visit to the Inner Palace**

*  Cannot be determined
** Residental compound of the emperors in the Heian period (794-1185) in Heiankyo (Kyoto).

With regards,
I.Nagy
